Day 3 of Spoken English: Talking About Time in the Past

    Hi friends, welcome back.

Spoken English Day 3 of our spoken English class. In this lesson, we are going to learn how to talk about time in the past. On Day 1 and 2, we learned how to talk about time in the present, like: It is 10 o’clock or It is 11 o’clock.

Now, if we want to say the same thing in the past, it is very simple. We just change “is” to “was.”

    For example:

    • It is 10 o’clock → It was 10 o’clock
    • It is 11 o’clock → It was 11 o’clock

That means 10 o’clock had already passed, or 11 o’clock had already passed.

    Using Past Time with “Was”

Whatever you learned on day two about telling time in the present, you can turn it into the past by using “was” instead of “is.” This works for time, days, months, seasons, and more.

For example, if you say: It is 10 to 11 (ten minutes remaining for eleven), then in the past you will say: It was 10 to 11.

If the time was half past ten, you say: It was half past ten.

If you want to say the time was about to change, like “it is getting ten o’clock,” then in the past you say: It was getting ten o’clock.

    Days in the Past

You can also use “was” when talking about days.

    • It was Monday
    • It was Tuesday
    • It was Thursday
    • It was Friday
    • It was Saturday

If you want to talk about yesterday, you can say: It was Monday yesterday.

    Months in the Past

The same rule applies to months.

    • It was January
    • It was February
    • It was April
    • It was May
    • It was June
    • It was October

You can also say: It was January last month or It was January previous month. Both are correct.

    Talking About Years

When talking about years, use the same pattern:

    It was twenty-four last year
    or
    It was twenty-four previous year

    Talking About Seasons

You can also talk about seasons in the past.

    • It was summer
    • It was the summer season
    • It was winter season
    • It was rainy days

    All these sentences are correct.

    Important Tip

The rule is very simple. Wherever you used “is” in the present, just use “was” to make it past. That is all you need to do.

Try to write these sentences somewhere and practice speaking them out loud. Practice is the most important thing if you want to learn spoken English.

    Examples:-

    | English Sentence (Past)  | Notes (Hindi)                    |
    | ------------------------ | -------------------------------- |
    | It was Monday.
    | It was 23rd.
    | It was 23rd of November.
    | It was 2022.
    | It was morning.
    | It was November.
    | It was summer.
    | It was morning.
    | It was a dark night.
    | It was January.
    | It was a pleasant day.

It was Monday yesterday. It was 2021 last year. It was October last month. Q. What day is it?
    A. It is Monday. It was September, I was sleeping. It was a dark night, I was on the rooftop. It was ten years ago, I was busy.

If you practice daily and use these sentences in real conversations, English will slowly become easier for you.

Thank you for reading. See you in the next lesson. Bye.
